Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga is taught at Half Moon Yoga

Long term health and vitality - Iyengar teaches you to love and respect your body, improving the overall functioning of the body—from the circulatory and lymph systems, to the nervous system and digestion.  Iyengar yoga helps to build a mind-body connection and build self awareness. When the body’s systems are working efficiently, you can start to focus your overall health and wellbeing. A daily and continued commitment to Iyengar can have an impact on mental and physical health.

Posture Improvement - A lot of back and neck pain and recurring tension comes from hunching, sitting or standing incorrectly for long periods of time. Iyengar focuses on alignment and strengthening core muscles. Iyengar is based on structured sequencing of movements and use of props to stretch and strengthen muscles so they can adequately support the body. Body alignment is a good first step towards reducing stress on the body and the mind.

Pain Relief and Injury Management- Iyengar yoga is great for those who are suffering from back pain, neck pain or any other recurring injury pain. Iyengar focuses on stretching the muscles through a series of sequences to relieve pain and reduce stress on the muscles. Iyengar teachers go through rigorous training (up to 500 hours), they are equipped to support you, they have a deep understanding of the body, its capabilities and how far it can be pushed - especially with injury.

Iyengar yoga is a dynamic form of Hatha yoga, as developed and taught by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar.

Iyengar yoga is known for its emphasis on precise bodily alignments, timing, props and sequencing. These techniques allow yoga practice to be approached flexibly according to the needs of individual students at different times of their lives

Props may also be used such as blankets, bolsters and belts to facilitate alignment and support in the asanas. Precise alignment of the body helps to correct postural imbalances. Correct alignment brings a sense of freedom and equilibrium. It is this alignment that is refreshing to the body and mind and it leaves us feeling restored after a class. Iyengar yoga is named after BKS Iyengar – the man who investigated classical hatha yoga and applied stringent detail and self-examination to his own practice to discover what asanas can do for the human body, mind and soul. It is his methodology of attention to detail that we teach at HMY.
